“Your work reaches further than you know” - Emotional letter sent to ECR
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
East Coast Radio received a heartfelt anonymous letter from a listener thanking the station for helping them through anxiety, stress, depression, and difficult moments.
There are some emails you read and move on from. Then there are the ones that stop an entire radio station in its tracks.
Last week, East Coast Radio received an anonymous letter from a listener, and it’s safe to say there were probably a few suspiciously emotional people in the studio pretending they “just had dust in their eyes.”
The heartfelt message wasn’t asking for money, shoutouts, prizes, or favours. Instead, it was something much simpler, and far more powerful: gratitude.
The listener explained how ECR had unknowingly become a source of comfort during some difficult moments involving anxiety, stress, depression, and the pressure of exams.
“This email isn’t for financial gain or a request, just a note of appreciation from one listener,” the letter began.
And from there, it only got more emotional.
The anonymous listener spoke about tough days where tuning into ECR made a real difference, describing how the station’s energy, conversations, and personalities gave them “something to hold onto” during difficult moments.
One moment in particular stood out.
The listener recalled sitting in an Uber during loadshedding while emotionally struggling, when the driver happened to have ECR playing on the radio.
“It made me reflect on how much you were there for me during moments of despair and times when I was emotionally not okay,” the letter read.
Honestly, that’s the thing about radio people often forget.
Behind the games, music, jokes, competitions, and chaos, radio quietly becomes part of people’s daily lives.
It’s there during traffic jams, breakups, celebrations, late-night drives, study sessions, awkward family road trips, and yes, even loadshedding survival missions.
Sometimes, presenters never truly realise how far their voices travel beyond the studio walls.
