Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
Ayakha Godlwana courageously rescued an elderly woman from a burning building in Durban, showcasing selfless bravery.
On a typical Thursday afternoon in Durban, chaos erupted as a fire broke out at the iconic Delphi Greek Restaurant, a landmark of the city.
The restaurant, nestled at the junction of Lillian Ngoyi, faced an unforeseen catastrophe, drawing crowds in panic. However, amid the chaos, one individual emerged as an unlikely hero.
Ayakha Godlwana, who owns a neighbouring restaurant, barely hesitated when he noticed smoke billowing from Delphi. Although his establishment was safe, his deep-rooted connection with the neighbouring restaurant drove him into action.
“We’re a close-knit community, and I couldn’t stand by watching our friends in distress,” he explained. His decision to move towards the fire rather than away from it defied every instinct of self-preservation.

Ayakha candidly shared the emotions that surged through his mind as he tore towards the escalating fire. “It was a saddening situation,” he recalls.
Realizing the potential danger that the elderly residents of Delphi faced, he instinctively moved to help. Despite not knowing whether anyone was trapped inside, the smoke-filled air demanded immediate intervention.
“I had no idea whatsoever,” Ayakha admitted, illustrating the unpredictability of such harrowing moments.
As he approached the property, he encountered Maureen, visibly distressed and panicked. “She was frantic, trying to reconcile with the sight of her home engulfed in flames,” Ayakha described.
The realisation that her sister was trapped upstairs added urgency to an already desperate situation. Maureen implored Ayakha, trusting him with the monumental task of rescuing her sister.
Entering a burning building requires a certain form of bravery that defies conventional logic. Ayakha knew the risks, yet he acted on instinct. “More than anything, my biggest concern was for the elderly lady,” he said, characterising his resolve to save her.
Fighting through fear, he recognised the urgency to act swiftly before the situation deteriorated.
