South Africa and Mexico just had a food baby called the ‘Boerrito’

South Africans are counting down the days until Bafana Bafana’s opening 2026 FIFA World Cup clash against Mexico, and Checkers Sixty60 has found a uniquely local way to celebrate the occasion.

The retailer has launched a light-hearted new advert starring former Bafana Bafana hero Siphiwe Tshabalala, while also introducing a limited-edition menu item that blends South African and Mexican flavours: the Boerrito.

The advert cleverly revisits one of the most memorable moments in South African football history; Tshabalala’s thunderous opening goal against Mexico during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Widely regarded as one of the tournament’s most iconic goals, it instantly became part of football folklore.

In the new campaign, Tshabalala symbolically passes the responsibility of “delivering for your country” to a Checkers Sixty60 driver, who embarks on an entertaining cross-continental journey to Mexico City.

Along the way, South African and Mexican cultures collide in hilarious fashion.

A makarapa becomes a sombrero, a mariachi band discovers the unmistakable sound of a vuvuzela, and the adventure eventually leads to a burrito food truck where the Boerrito is created.

The limited-edition Boerrito puts a proudly South African spin on a Mexican favourite.

The wrap is packed with Championship Boerewors, rice, black beans, cheddar cheese, chilli, coriander and tomato relish.

For fans looking to fuel up before kick-off, the Boerrito will be available from 9 June at Checkers stores nationwide and through Checkers Sixty60.

It carries a launch price of R49.99, with a special offer of two for R80.

With Bafana Bafana set to renew their rivalry with Mexico on football’s biggest stage, the campaign is a nostalgic nod to one of South Africa’s greatest sporting memories while serving up a tasty reminder that football and food are always better when shared.
