12 things nobody warns you about when you get glasses
Updated | By East Coast Breakfast
These are the things nobody tells you when you get glasses. Can you relate?
Carmen is about to join a very exclusive club. A club with over four billion members worldwide.
The glasses club.
As a first-time spectacle wearer, she’s probably expecting sharper vision, fewer headaches and the ability to finally read tiny restaurant menus without holding them at arm’s length.
What she might not be prepared for are all the weird, wonderful and slightly annoying surprises that come with wearing glasses for the first time.

You’ll suddenly realise the world is in HD
The first thing new glasses wearers notice is that everything looks… suspiciously detailed.
Trees have individual leaves.
Road signs can be read from a distance.
People’s faces are sharper.
You may even discover your house wasn’t as clean as you thought it was.
Congratulations. You’ve unlocked Ultra HD Vision.
Stairs become terrifying for about three days
Many first-time wearers say stairs suddenly look different.
Your brain needs a little time to adjust to seeing depth through lenses, so don’t be surprised if you approach every staircase like you’re crossing a canyon.
It gets better.
Usually.
Rain becomes your nemesis
Rain and glasses have been sworn enemies since the invention of spectacles.
One tiny drizzle and suddenly you’re looking through what appears to be a watercolour painting.
Everyone will ask to try them on
Friends. Family. Colleagues.
Someone will inevitably say:
“Let me see.”
Then they’ll put your glasses on, squint dramatically and announce:
“Wow, you’re blind!”
Thank you, Karen. That’s literally why I have them.
You’ll constantly lose something that’s on your face
There will come a day when you spend several minutes looking for your glasses.
While wearing them.
Every glasses wearer reaches this milestone eventually.
You’ll discover how dirty your lenses get
You clean them.
They sparkle.
Thirty seconds later they somehow look like they’ve been used to butter toast.
Nobody knows how this happens.
Science is still investigating.

Selfies require a new skill set
Welcome to the exciting world of glare management.
You’ll spend the next few weeks tilting your head at strange angles trying to avoid reflections.
Eventually you’ll master it and become unstoppable.
People might not recognise you
It’s amazing what a pair of frames can do.
Some people will tell you that you look smarter.
Others will say you look more professional.
A few will insist you look completely different.
Enjoy your accidental rebrand.
You’ll become weirdly protective of them
The first scratch hurts.
The second scratch hurts more.
Soon you’ll be placing your glasses down with the care usually reserved for priceless museum artefacts.
Movie nights become better
Reading subtitles suddenly becomes effortless.
Tiny text becomes readable.
And if you’re watching a mystery series, you might actually notice clues hidden in the background.
Taking them off feels strange
After a while, your glasses stop feeling like something you’re wearing and start feeling like part of you.
Which means taking them off can feel surprisingly weird.
Like removing a superpower.
You’ll wonder how you ever lived without them
The biggest surprise isn’t the adjustment.
It’s realizing how much you weren’t seeing before.
Most new glasses wearers have the same reaction after a few weeks:
“Wait… has the world always looked like this?”
The answer is yes. You just finally got the director’s cut.
Welcome to the spectacle life, Carmen.
