Yoco launches tap to pay in South Africa

Your iPhone is now a card machine: Yoco launches tap to pay in South Africa.

South African businesses, street vendors, side hustlers and just about anyone selling anything legally (sorry, backyard dinosaur dealers) just got a major upgrade.

Yoco has officially launched Tap to Pay on iPhone in South Africa.

This means merchants can now accept card and digital wallet payments using just an iPhone.

No card machine. No extra hardware. No “Sorry, cash only.” Not even a frantic searching for the charger of the card machine that disappeared three weeks ago.

So… how does it work?

The feature allows businesses to securely accept contactless payments directly through the Yoco App using an iPhone.

Customers can simply tap their contactless debit or credit card, Apple Pay and other digital wallets against the merchant’s iPhone to complete payment using NFC technology.

One of the biggest selling points is that merchants don’t need a separate card machine or payment terminal anymore.

If you have an iPhone XS or newer with the latest iOS update and the Yoco App; you can start accepting payments within minutes.

That means faster setup, less hardware to carry around, and more flexibility for businesses working on the move.

Digital payments have exploded across South Africa in recent years, with more consumers relying on tap payments, smartphones and digital wallets for everyday purchases.

And now, thanks to this rollout, your next coffee run might end with someone saying: “Just tap your card on my phone.”

What a time to be alive.
