South Africa is introducing a digital ID system through Home Affairs. Here’s how it works, how to apply and how much it costs.

South Africa is officially stepping into the future (no, seriously this time).

The Department of Home Affairs has published draft regulations that could introduce a digital ID system, allowing citizens to carry their identity securely on their smartphones.

What is South Africa’s digital ID?

Think of it as your green ID book or smart card, but upgraded.

Instead of digging through your wallet like you’re searching for buried treasure, your ID will live on an app, specifically the MyMzansi app.

This can be used via:

  • NFC (tap-and-go)
  • Bluetooth
  • QR codes

Basically, your identity just got a tech glow-up.

How long is the digital ID valid?

The digital ID won’t last forever (nothing in life does, not even free WiFi).

The digital ID will be valid for five years, and you’ll get notified 90 days before it expires.

Renewal can be done through facial biometric verification.

No queues. No paperwork. No “system is offline” trauma.

How much will the digital ID cost?

Here’s the part that sounds almost too good:

  • Applying at Home Affairs offices: FREE
  • Renewals: Also appear to be FREE

At private enrolment points, there might be standard ID-related fees, but no extra hidden surprises have been confirmed yet.

How to apply for a digital ID?

Before you get too excited, you can’t just download it and vibe.

To get your digital ID, you’ll need to:

  1. Visit an accredited enrolment point (like DHA offices or selected locations)
  2. Complete biometric verification
  3. Wait for approval from the Director-General

After that? It’s all in your phone.

However, it’s NOT replacing your ID card.

The digital ID is optional, and your physical ID remains valid. You can use either one as proof of identity.

So if you still trust your wallet more than your phone battery, you’re safe.
