SA fuel price surge: Should work from home be reinstated? (Pros & Cons)

Should working from home be reinstated? Here are the real pros and cons South Africans are facing right now.

2K for petrol?

Ahhhh yes… 2026.

The year Tyla did it again, global headlines got wild, and South Africans unlocked a new fear: looking at the fuel pump total.

R26 per litre for petrol and pushing R31 for diesel? At this point, filling your tank feels like a financial decision you need to pray about first.

Just 10 years ago (2016), we were complaining about fuel hitting R13 per litre. Now, that price feels like a Black Friday special.

Recently, a post went viral after a driver shared his fuel pump total.

73 litres = nearly R2100.

Let that sink in. At around R20 per litre, that same tank would’ve been about R1500. In 2016, that would've cost R950.

On paper, it doesn’t look like a massive jump, but in real life? That difference hits hard, especially if you’re driving to work every single day.

And just like that, the conversation is back: Should working from home make a comeback?

If we’re being honest, most of us are already working through emails, meetings, and calls anyway.

So, let’s weigh the pros and cons.

The pros of working from home

You save MONEY (and not small money)

No petrol. Fewer takeaways. Less “I just popped into Woolies” lies that end in regret.

Goodbye commute, hello sleep

That daily drive? Gone. You wake up, open your laptop, and congrats, you’re at work.

Your space, your vibe

Your music. Your snacks. Your temperature. No office aircon trying to turn you into frozen chicken.

Work is already digital

Between Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and emails you could be in Bali, Bluff, or bed. No one really knows.

Your dress code is controlled chaos

Formal on top. Pajamas at the bottom. We’ve all done it. Don’t lie.

The Cons of Working From Home

Distractions hit different at home

Laundry. TV. Snacks. That one couch calling your name like it knows your secrets.

“Zoom fatigue” is real

Back-to-back meetings on Zoom or Microsoft Teams will drain you faster than load shedding drains your battery.

Work-life balance? What’s that?

When your office is your bedroom, switching off becomes optional.

You actually miss people (sometimes)

No random office chats. No lunch breaks. No overhearing drama that has nothing to do with you, but somehow involves you.

Tech issues = panic mode

WiFi drops mid-meeting and suddenly you’re fighting for your career like it’s a reality show finale.

So…

Is working from home the answer? Or do we just hate spending half our salary getting to work?

Maybe the sweet spot is somewhere in the middle; a little office, a little home… and a lot less petrol.

At this point, it’s not just about productivity anymore; it’s about survival
