Do you want to build a snowman? These places in KZN have a good chance of seeing snowfall this winter, weather permitting.

Parts of KwaZulu-Natal will be turning into a winter wonderland between June and August, and sun-loving Durbanites aren't mad about it.

KZN residents who live on the East Coast are notoriously sun worshippers, but even they get excited about the snow.

So much so that they are willing to put on their warmest winter coats in search of snow.

Heavy snowfall is not guaranteed, but the province is already receiving reports of light snow in some areas.

According to the SA Weather Service, a cut-off low-pressure system is expected to bring "widespread cold, wet, and windy conditions across several provinces this week".

While the Western Cape and Eastern Cape will be most affected, some high-lying areas in KZN will also be affected, which could result in some light snowfall.

Drakensberg Snow 2026

The Drakensberg began experiencing its first snowfall as early as May, making it one of the best places to see snow this winter.

The region is a winter tourist hotspot, as its famous mountain range is covered in snow most years.

Snow hikes are usually planned in the region for the ultimate 'Winter in July' experience. Follow resorts and accommodation venues in the area this winter, as many will often share pictures when it starts to snow.

Areas to consider:

  • Sani Pass and Underberg (Southern Drakensberg)
  • Giant's Castle (Central Drakensberg)
  • Cathedral Peak and Champagne Castle (Central Drakensberg)
  • Highmoor Nature Reserve

The Midlands region

The Midlands Meander is one of KZN's top year-round tourist destinations. It is also one of the handful of places in the province that have experienced snow in recent years, though less frequently than the Drakensberg.

Areas to consider:

  • Nottingham Road
  • Howick

Think twice before rushing out to get a glimpse of the snow. The N3 in the KZN Midlands has been closed several times in the past due to snowfall. You could get stuck for hours!

Tracking down snowfall can be fun, but only if done responsibly.
