Smoking the 'green stuff' is not a criminal offence anymore - that's according to a Constitutional Court ruling which was passed on Tuesday.

According to Newswatch, the possession and use of dagga in private homes are no longer punishable by law in the land. Marijuana can now be cultivated and used for an adult's personal consumption in their home. Newswatch journalist Bernadette Wolhuter also spoke to East Coast Drive to explain more about the legalisation of the drug. Listen to the interview here in case you missed it.

The Constitutional Court took to their Twitter account on Tuesday to share a summary of the judgement handed down and passed.

An anonymous KZN man contacted my producer after hearing the news. He wanted to share his story with us about how thrilled he was that dagga is now decriminalised - something that he had been wanting to happen for a long time.

While many like this anonymous man are happy, some aren't best pleased by the ruling, but South African political party 'The Dagga Party' are understandably thrilled.

The party's leader, Jeremy David Acton, took to his Facebook page to express gratitude for all the messages he received. Acton appealed the Western Cape's judgement back in 2017.

"We must operate in discrete community-based social agreements and private transaction processes of small amounts, and everyone must plant. Employers must stop the p**s tests and prejudice against cannabis," he said.

As expected, the hashtag 'Dagga' trended for most of the day, with many taking to social media to share hilarious memes based on the ruling.
