Is it appropriate for parents and kids to drink together?

One KZN listener sent in a voice note after witnessing a mother ordering her 18-year-old son shots during his coming-of-age celebration.

I received a voice note from a listener while at a restaurant after he witnessed the table next to his celebrating a birthday. A mom ordered drinks and shots for his son to mark his 18th birthday, the man was taken aback by the mom's actions.

It’s a known fact that from a young age, children learn about acceptable behaviour by watching and copying their parent's example, so when it comes to drinking, it really is a case of leading by example.

What they see at home and out of the home environment helps them think about how they’ll act like adults. So when it comes to drinking, just like children learn to walk and talk like their parents, they learn how to drink like them too.
