We bid farewell to the Matric results newspaper tradition
Who did you go with to get your results?
As a matric student, there has always been a sense of coming of age in your final year of school. The feeling of seniority at school, reaching the peak of your schooling career, it is a milestone time for many students.
It marks a time where you are leaving the nest almost, and rising to your adulthood. So the energy and vibe around the release of the matric results has always had an exciting feel to it.
Therefore the announcement by the Department of Education that the release of the matric results will no longer be published on public platforms, most memorably the newspaper, is somewhat disheartening.
Of course, their reasoning is sound and is motivated by the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). But we just remember the excitement and tradition around looking for your name in the paper with friends and family.
Many people have their own opinions about this and rightly so. Carol Ofori remembers the year she matriculated and went out looking for a newspaper with her cousin. But nevertheless, she says that she feels indifferent to the decision to not publish names on public platforms.
In the grander scheme of things, in a world where your personal information is readily exposed to criminals, we can totally understand this way forward. Plus, this way avoids the gossip and scandal that comes with family and neighbours talking about your child's results.
