A journey rooted in strength and determination

Vellie matriculated in 1976 from Arthur Blaxall School, then known as New Horizon School for the Blind.

The school remains closely connected to the rich history and legacy of the KZN Blind and Deaf Society, an organisation that has spent decades empowering persons with disabilities across KwaZulu-Natal.

Her academic journey continued at the University of Durban-Westville, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Bachelor of Law degree. This is an extraordinary achievement that laid the foundation for a successful legal career.

After completing her articles, Vellie entered the legal profession and built a respected career as an attorney, proving that barriers can be overcome through persistence, courage, and belief in one’s abilities.

More than professional success

Known for her vibrant personality and unwavering positivity, Vellie has consistently embraced challenges with determination and grace.

Her commitment to service extends far beyond her legal career. She served on the General Council of the KZN Blind and Deaf Society and also held the role of President of the Southern Light Group.

This is an initiative created to support the social, recreational, and rehabilitation needs of blind individuals.

Through these leadership roles, she became more than a professional success story. She became a voice, a role model, and a symbol of empowerment for many within the community.

The power of support and community

Vellie’s journey also highlights the critical role that support structures and organisations can play in changing lives.

The KZN Blind and Deaf Society supported her throughout various stages of her life; from her high school years, to assisting with university applications and bursary opportunities, and later helping her establish her legal practice.

Her story is a powerful reflection of what becomes possible when talent, determination, and community support come together.
