South African towns revolt over government name changes
Thousands push back as Graaff-Reinet and East London refuse to change identity.
South Africans are fighting over many things in 2026. Fuel prices. Load shedding. Whether pineapple belongs on pizza.
However now, two towns have entered full gladiator mode against government name changes.
The towns? Graaff-Reinet and East London.
And let’s just say, the residents are not exactly handing over the keys peacefully.

In February 2026, the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture gazetted official changes that would rename Graaff-Reinet to Robert Sobukwe Town and East London to KuGompo City.
Other proposed changes included:
- Aberdeen → Xamdebo
- Adendorp → Bishop Limba
- Barkly East → Ekhephini
Cue absolute chaos.
Graaff-Reinet residents, especially, have basically said: “Respectfully… no.”
The historic town, founded in 1786 and considered the fourth-oldest town in South Africa, has become ground zero for resistance.
Some locals are outright refusing to use the new name, while attorneys and political parties have launched legal challenges.
According to Parliament, over 38,000 objections were submitted against the renaming process.
Now here’s the awkward part…
Fewer than 600 people were reportedly consulted for the Graaff-Reinet changes, and under 300 for East London.
So naturally, South Africans did what South Africans do best when upset: They filled out forms. Aggressively.
Even Gayton McKenzie admitted the department is drowning in objections right now, saying officials are still busy processing the massive volume of submissions.
Translation: Someone at DSAC opened their inbox and immediately needed rooibos tea and emotional support.
The government says the changes could still be upheld, amended, or even withdrawn entirely. Nothing is final just yet.
And honestly, this entire debate has become bigger than just names.

For some South Africans, renaming towns is about restoring identity, honouring struggle heroes, and correcting colonial-era history.
For others, it feels like communities are being ignored while decisions are pushed through with limited consultation.
That tension is exactly why government now wants to change the name-changing process itself.
A new Draft South African Geographical Names Council Amendment Bill aims to create clearer consultation rules and importantly; an appeal tribunal so people can formally challenge name changes without immediately running to court.
Apparently South Africa realised:
Maybe asking 300 people before renaming an entire city is… not enough. At this point, one thing is certain: The battle over town names is far from over.
Somewhere in Graaff-Reinet, there’s probably still a stubborn uncle saying: “Google Maps can call it whatever it wants. I’m still writing Graaff-Reinet on the envelope.”
