Carol's bizarre scam story: Who's tried to scam you?

Carol Ofori shared her bizarre story of her almost being scammed three times in a week. KZN also shared their scam stories and you won't believe them.

In the latest edition of Bizarre Stories, Carol Ofori had a story that was equal parts hilarious and slightly terrifying.

Picture this: a quiet, upmarket double-storey home in Umhlanga, except it’s not so quiet. Police storm in to find it’s allegedly a fake call centre. Over 20 suspects were arrested, neighbours were shook and the WhatsApp groups were on fire.

Residents say crime in Durban North and Umhlanga has actually dropped lately (love that for them), but fraud? Oh, fraud is thriving like it pays rent.

Carol didn’t just watch this story unfold, she felt it. In the same week, scammers tried her THREE TIMES. Three. Times. At this point, it’s basically a toxic situationship.

So, she asked KZN one simple question: In the last 24 hours, who tried to scam you?

Here’s where things go from “wow, that’s crazy” to “okay, I’m checking every unknown number forever.”

According to Truecaller:

  • 46.9 BILLION spam calls were flagged globally
  • 230.7 BILLION spam messages detected
  • And in South Africa alone, 5.38 billion spam calls in just TWO months

That’s not a scam problem. That’s a scam pandemic.

Don't be a victim

Look, scammers are out here working overtime. But you don’t have to make their job easy.

That’s where Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) comes in. They’re basically the Avengers of fraud prevention, helping protect your identity and shut down dodgy activity before it ruins your day (or your bank account).
