Is surveillance technology violating our privacy?

Western Cape officials say they have the technology to zoom into people’s bedroom. What does this mean for our rights to privacy.

You know how we all believe that what we do in our homes is private and confidential, and that we can walk around in our undies or butt naked if we want? Well next time you're in the City of Cape Town think twice before you roam around in your birthday suit.

Yesterday, city officials shocked Western Cape parliamentarians when they revealed that for the past seven years, the municipality has been using cameras able to zoom into homes and other properties to the extent that they can see the set-up of residents' bedrooms.

According to reports, officials said that the images are far more invasive than Google Street View and were captured for property valuations. The Head of Data Services, Themba Musekiwa was quoted as saying "So, without us having to physically inspect a property, sitting behind my computer in the office I can see your house"

Apparently, the city was allowed by law to use this technology but it has me thinking how many of the residents of the city of Cape Town actually know that this technology has been used on them for the past 7 years.

Would you be comfortable knowing that this technology was in full use? Do you think this is a violation of privacy? Leave your comments below.
