Giving back to our unsung heroes

Bev is currently fighting Cancer and wants to highlight the work the unsung heroes that look after her at the Oncology unit in Durban.

Bev wrote in to the Big Favour, not to ask for something for herself, but rather to ask if we could help those who look after her while she is treated for Cancer...

Here is her letter:

"Dear Damon,

We have chatted before, My name is Bev Baxter (Mums Mail Pink Princess) and I am a Cancer patient diagnosed with Breast to Bone Cancer, stage 4, almost four years ago. I and my family have travelled a long and hard road with what we have come to call plenty speed bumps along the road. However I am still alive and kicking and living my life to the fullest.

This email is not about me, however, but our UNSUNG HEROES. We as Cancer patients  go through chemo treatment weekly and it is here that we come into contact with  Our Unsung Heroes, Our second Family from home, the staff and nursing sisters who take care of our every need.  This team of Nursing sisters put up our drips, laugh cry and calm us when we are having a bad day. Some days their days are so frantic they are lucky to see a cup of coffee before lunch time but never a moan or groan from them, they carry on relentlessly.

These ladies do a job which save people's lives daily and so often have to deal with the daily loss of patients with whom they've forged friendships with over many years.

Damon my wish is for us in this month of October , Breast Cancer Month is to show these Unsung Heroes some appreciation for the way they go way above and beyond what their duty calls for. Would you consider trying to bless theses amazing ladies with a treat which they wouldn't be able to afford or dream of, A Pampering and Time Out at A Day Spa at the likes of Mangwanani SPA , from all their patients, who could not get through each day without their undivided love and ongoing support.

This team of unsung Heroes are the Nursing sisters of Westridge Oncology Unit, The Cleaning Lady Beauty who makes us tea as we need, The admin ladies, Ronelle who fights daily with Medical Aids to get them to approve the much needed drugs we need and the girls in the drug room and the labs.

Please Damon bless these ladies who after an emotional day of dealing with up to 50 cancer patients daily still have to go home and be moms and wives after their daily emotionally draining days."
