Family time ‘peppered’ with love

Family time ‘peppered’ with love

Are cell phones, tablets and other electronic devices robbing you of precious moments with your children? A pepper grinder company believes it has created the answer to your prayers.

Picture this. You sit down for a meal with your family. You’re just about to tuck in but realise you forgot to add some salt and pepper to your food.

You ask your 13-year-old to pass the shakers to you. No response. You patiently ask again. Still no movement. Right now, all you keep thinking about is how to obliterate that cell phone your 13-year-old’s been typing furiously on. Yes, that same sickening phone that you bought for his birthday. It must be destroyed.

Believe it or not, I witnessed this scenario yesterday, on Father’s Day. A dad was sitting with his three children at a restaurant on the Durban beachfront and looking at them.

Their heads were bowed down, their eyes glued to the glare of their cell phone screens. I suppose he was trying to figure out what to say to tear them away from their phones for one second. I really felt for him. His three kids had no idea that he was yearning for one glance, one smile, one word.

I think this dad would appreciate the 'Pepper Hacker'. It’s a unique device that looks like a pepper grinder. However, its inventors hid technology inside that lets parents turn Wi-Fi routers, cell phones and the TV off for 30 minutes. All you need to do is twist the grinder once.
