Despite desperate appeals by Australia's foreign minister for a stay of execution, the executions were carried out after midnight.

The eight convicted smugglers were executed by firing squad at Besi prison on Nusakambangan Island on Tuesday.

They were given 72-hours notice.

Australia has since recalled its ambassador to Indonesia in protest after two of its citizens, Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan were killed.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, "These executions are both cruel and unnecessary. Cruel because both Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran spent some decade in jail before being executed, and unnecessary because both of these young Australians were fully rehabilitated while in prison."

Abbott said he respected Indonesia's sovereignty, but simply could not accept the execution.

Amnesty International, meanwhile, also condemned the executions saying they showed a "complete disregard for due process and human rights safeguards."
