Gabriel, who is a huge football fan, shares why Amazulu is in serious trouble and what they need to do on the football field.

You know things are at their worst possible level when football commentators say “A draw will be a good confidence booster for them!” What? Since when is sharing the spoils good for anyone? That was the common saying last night, when Amazulu hosted Mamelodi Sundowns.

For a football fan like me, more specially an Amazulu fan, I find such sayings unjust. Let’s just look at ourselves on a good, streak free, unbroken mirror. Amazulu is in serious trouble. No draw is going to be good enough to save us from relegation.

It’s been 11 years since we were relegated to First Division. Do we miss it that badly that, we are dying to get back to “less attractive football?” We have to win the next four games in order to breathe a sigh of relief, that’s assuming that Platinum Stars will lose their four matches.

Unlike most commentators and still hopeful fans, I’m under no illusion that we will survive this season. We are facing the dark chasms of First Division in the face. I’ve been to those First Division matches. The stadiums are generally filled to capacity by TV crews and technical staff teams. I mean, “they are filled to capacity…on the pitch.” The stadium seats are empty.

Usuthu, their nickname was the name of King Shaka’s army. Fearless! Brutal on the battlefield! What I watched on TV in this Usuthu team shows no fear or brutality towards their opponents. It’s like a Facebook Fan Page for “mass action of some sort”.
No matter what powerful thing you call it, it never lives up to it and it pretty much ineffective. I miss the old Usuthu!  I miss the team who played with heart and soul.

Interestingly enough, the late Henry Cele, who played the character of King Shaka in the TV series, played for Amazulu back in the days. Those who played against him, will tell you that, he was just as intimidating on the field, as he was on TV…and he was a goalkeeper. Whatever happened to that Usuthu team?

If was the Chairman, Dr Sokhela or the MD, Mr O’Connor…I would be suffering from insomnia by now. I’ll leave the coach Steve Barker out of it for now, he arrived not so long ago and inherited problems and only given ninety minutes per time to sort them out.
Sadly, he has less time to save the team, than a monthly premium on a Business Package cellphone contract. 990 minutes! 11 games!
