Kok eager to impress at the Sharks
Updated | By Nick Tatham
New Cell C Sharks
signing Werner Kok has settled in well into the Durban way of life and knows he
has his work cut out for him when it comes to selection but is looking forward
to everything the new challenge has to throw at him.
“We will have to renegotiate now with the Olympics being moved by a year but
that’s not what I’m worried about,” Kok said.
“I was going to shift full-time to fifteens after the Olympic Games this year
so the Sharks are all I’m focusing on now and making sure I can contribute as
much as possible.
“Watching the Sharks during Super Rugby made me a little bit nervous because
how do you walk into a team with guys that playing such good rugby!
“Having now been part of training there is so much excitement and I cannot wait
to play with such talented players.”
With so much talent around him, Kok knows that it’s going to be a challenge
when fighting it out for places in the team for that first game back – whenever
it might be. He feels that working hard and making himself known at training is
a good starting point.
“I’ve set my self small goals so far from developing relationships with the other
guys and now I am trying to take in as much information as possible and train
as hard as I can to make sure I am in the running for selection for that first
match.
“That is my aim and I am not holding back anything going into it!”
Kok’s sevens career is well documented, however it was a career that nearly didn’t
take off until he was spotted at the Craven Week Sevens tournament in 2009.
“I was going to go and study at Tuks because I wasn’t in line for a scholarship
or anything to play rugby,” he mentioned.
“At the Craven Week Sevens tournament I caught the eye of Neil Powell and Marius
Schoeman who then told me that I was going to go to the academy in Stellenbosch.
“It was one tournament that changed my life in the end!” Kok added.
