EXCLUSIVE: 'Balanced' Jordy closing in on WSL title

South African surfer Jordy Smith says balance has been key to his return to the top of the World Surf League Championship Tour standings for the first time since 2011.

The 29-year-old surfer has enjoyed one of the best years of his career and finds himself leading the pack with four stops left to go on the Championship Tour.

Smith has managed to stay healthy and injury-free and has put in some amazing performances – including a rare perfect heat in J-Bay back in July.

His best performance this year culminated in winning the Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in Victoria, Australia. Coupled with three five-place finishes as well as a third place, the South African leads the pack going into stop eight in Lower Tresles in California next month.

In this exclusive interview, Smith delves into his injury-plagued career and how he’s learned to look after his body. He also reflects on his perfect heat at J-Bay, how he deals with his heavy travel schedule and his closest competitor going into the last four stops on the Championship Tour.
