De Villiers is presently taking a self-imposed sabbatical from Test cricket, while the Proteas contest a three-Test series in New Zealand.

De Villiers recently led the South Africans to a 3-2 ODI series victory over the Black Caps and also emerged as the leading run-scorer in that series with 262.

De Villiers is ahead of Australian kingpin, David Warner, at the top of the rankings.

De Villiers is on 875 points - four points ahead of Warner and 23 clear of Virat Kohli.

It is the 10th time that the 33-year-old De Villiers is at the top of the rankings, since first taking the spot in May 2010.

He has never been ranked outside the top five since September 2009.

With Imran Tahir listed as the top ODI bowler, South Africans now top both the ODI bowling and batting rankings.

Tahir is also presently the top-ranked T20 bowler.
