Boks clinch Paris victory with extra-time try
Updated | By Shaun Ryan
South African replacement hooker, Bongi Mbonambi crashed
over the try line deep into extra-time to help the Springboks snatch victory
away from France in Paris last night.
South Africa emerged 29-26 winners, despite the hosts leading 26-22 at the 80-minute mark.
Mbonambi found his jumpers perfectly with a series of late second half penalties to set up scoring opportunities for the visitors.
The final throw-in saw South Africa set-up a strong driving maul – with Mbonambi eventually breaking away from back to dart over the line, silencing the crowd who had moments before started singing when victory for the Tricolore seemed inevitable.
Mbonambi’s try was enough to clinch victory – the first for South Africa on their end-of-year tour after losing by one point to England last week – but flyhalf Handre Pollard added the extras to make it a three-point game.
Cell C Sharks wing, Sbu Nkosi crossed over the line in the first half for the Springbok’s first try.
South Africa have not lost to Frane since 2009.
