Big grunter in Durban harbour

Big grunter in Durban harbour

The latest Kingfisher report says Durban Bay has cleaned up nicely and that there are still some good catches of grunter in the 5kg range.

There has also been some springer activity around the Coaling Shed.

Anglers from the side have also managed to land the odd bigger grunter and small spoons and drop shots have worked well for juvenile kingfish.

Don’t forget the Christmas Bay Classic which is coming up on 7 December - entry forms are available at most reputable tackle shops.

Here are a few more snippets of fishing news:

Umhlanga – This spot which is unusually quiet for this time of the year, with only a handful of grey sharks coming out in the evenings. The Saltwater Sport Bite Trace with redeye cutlet and chokka is proving to be excellent bait.

Beachwood/Virginia – Both of these areas are producing a fair amount of snoek. The best areas are to look for holes and a good pair of Snowbee Polarised Sunglasses can help you to see where fish are actively chasing bait-fish and give you a good zone in which to throw your spoon.

Blue Lagoon – The North Bank side saw lots of activity with Anglers using the Daiwa Exceler saltwater rod as well as the Exceler 4000 Reels, topped up with 20lb Triple Fish Gator braid. These outfits allowed the spinning fundi’s’ to throw bullet spoons a long way to enable them with a fast retrieve to catch snoek. For novices trying this technique, take note that snoek have soft mouths so you need to be a bit gentler when pulling this fish in the shore break.

Durban Piers – There are still a few grunter to be had along the beaches, with the odd smaller stumpy also coming out. Anglers fishing off the pier have also tried their luck with drop shotting and spinning for snoek which can be seen just on the backline.

Durban Beachfront – There have been a few skates coming out, while the predominately south easterly winds seem to have chased the fish away. Late evening sessions have seen a few grey sharks, although the peckers seem to get to any bait before its intended target.

Bluff – With cleaner water and a much cleaner beach, anglers have once again begun fishing here. Mixed luck as some sessions in the morning have produced the odd kingfish, while a late afternoon session has seen the odd grey shark come out.

Toti/Winkelspruit – These spots have been unusually quiet for this time of year. Winkelspruit has had a few small grey sharks, while Toti saw less fish, although a lovely sand shark of just over 25kg was caught on Wednesday evening.

Umkomaas – Guys are still getting the odd kob in the late evening and into the night. The ledges have also produced some small Lessers, as well as some brown skates. This is definitely an area to keep an eye on as it often produces good fish in the summer months.

Scottburgh – Still one of the few places where lucky anglers have managed to catch a garrick or two.  More prominent have been the brown skates and grey sharks up to 10 kilos.
