Among them – South Africa’s Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba, Zambian President Edgar Lungu, and American actor, director and producer, Forest Whitaker.

More than a thousand participants will gather at the Nkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre.

South Africa plays host to the event, amid some economic and political upheaval in the country.

The downgrade to junk status, cabinet reshuffle and calls for the president to go, have dominated headlines in recent weeks.

ANC KZN spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli spoke to Newswatch ahead of the opening of the three-day forum.

"The African heads of state - together with captains of industry towards the continent and the rest of the world - will be converging in Durban to reflect on the current economic developments in the world and the challenges of economic growth," he says.
