Women's group wants parole board investigated

The Progressive Women’s Movement of South Africa says it will be writing to the Speaker of the National Assembly to have Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services launch a probe into the Correctional Services Parole Board.

This is after the board's decision to release Oscar Pistorius on probation was referred to the parole review board yesterday by Justice Minister - Michael Masutha.

Pistorius was due to be released from the Kgosi Mampuru Prison on correctional supervision tomorrow, after serving a sixth of his five-year sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013.

The movement earlier sent a petition to the minister, which prompted Masutha to block Pistorius' release.

The minister also says the decision to release him was taken prematurely and with no legal basis.

The movement's Jacqui Mofokeng, who's sat beside Steenkamp's mother, June throughout Pistorius' trial - says they feel more inmates could have been released from prison before their time.

"We welcome the decision of the minister and we are saying that we really respect his being honest with unshakable principle of telling us the truth of the process not having been followed.

"We're calling on the minister to probe the parole board that decided on this matter. [With regards to cases over the past 12 months], we need to  know what was happening and if they [parole board took the right decisions]," she said.
