Woman arrested for leaving baby outside Durban restaurant

A 21-year-old woman is appearing in a Durban court today on allegations of child abandonment.
She was arrested for allegedly abandoning her baby girl in an alley near a restaurant in Verulam on Friday night.
The child was found by an employee of the restaurant on Wick Street.
Reaction Unit's Prem Balram says they received a call following the discovery of the infant.

"Reaction officers arrived on scene and found a baby girl - lying on the pathway on the staircase. Paramedics stabilised the child and they handed her over to South African police."

Balram says the arrest was made yesterday morning.
"Information was received the following day, reaction officers kept observation of her house in Zwelisha in Verulam, and eventuallyarrested the mother 18 hours later. She was charged for child abandonment," he said.
