WHO: No confirmed cases of coronavirus in SA

There are no known cases of coronavirus in South Africa, says local health officials.

The World Health Organisation's Regional Office for Africa says all 71 samples received by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases have tested negative for the deadly strain.


It comes after claims of suspected cases in some provinces.

Professor Cheryl Cohen who is with the institute, says, There have been no confirmed cases of coronavirus in South Africa despite rumours coming from various provinces." 


"We at the NICD have tested a number of samples from persons on the investigation. As of today. No samples have tested positive." 


The virus outbreak is centred in the central Chinese city of Wuhan.


It's killed around 490 people since its emergence in December. Over 24,000 people are infected.
