Water supply interruption due to power failure - Umgeni Water
Updated | By Nothando Mkhize
There has been a major electrical fault at the Midmar Water treatment Plant in Howick.
As a result, Umgeni Water says the plant has not been receiving power since the early hours of Saturday, meaning they are unable to treat water to drinking standards.
Umgeni Water is responsible for the supply of drinking water to the eThekwini metro, Msunduzi Local Municipality, and uMgungundlovu, iLembe, Ugu, Harry Gwala and King Cetshwayo District Municipalities.
The utility says uMgungundlovu, Msunduzi and parts of eThekwini are affected.
Umgeni Water's Shami Harichunder says they expect power to be restored by midnight.
"The following areas area affected by not receiving water; Howick West, Mpophomeni, Groenekloof, Vulindlela, Edendale. A significant part of Pietermartizburg, Richmond, Camperdown and Eston.”
Harichunder says the utility is doing everything possible to try to restore the power supply.
"This is a problem that occurred and it was unpredicted. In the meantime contractors are doing everything they can to restore power supply as quickly as possible.”
