Scenes of the incident - captured on dashcam and seen in aerial footage - show a heavy duty truck speed through an intersection and ploughing through a number of vehicles at the intersection in Pinetown.

22 people died at the scene - while two others later passed away in hospital.

Calls were subsequently made by organisations and political parties for the KZN Transport Department to impose a ban on all heavy vehicles using the road as an alternative to the N3 toll route.

The owner of Sagekal Logistics - the company that owns one of the trucks that ploughed into the vehicles made his first court appearance in July this year.

Gregory Govender faces charges of employing an illegal immigrant, operating an unroadworthy vehicle, and operating a vehicle that was not safe to the public. At first, he was not charged in the fatal 2013 crash.

He is due to appear again in the Verulam Magistrate's Court on September 26.

While Sanele May - who was 23-years-old at the time - was sentenced to eight years and 10 months in jail.

He pleaded guilty to 31 charges in 2014 - including 24 counts of culpable homicide, two charges of possessing a fraudulent driver’s licence as well as that of failing to adhere to a road traffic sign - to name a few.
