"While it is too soon to say if Africa is seeing a resurgence, however, we are seeing an increase in a number of countries. We are monitoring the situation very closely and we see that we are balancing of a knife's edge.

"South Africa accounts for almost a third of these new cases, with two out of nine provinces already experiencing a third wave, in fact, most of the provinces are seeing an increase in a number of cases," said Moeti.

Moeti pleaded with countries with an excess vaccine to donate them to the Covax facility.

She appealed France decision to donate 31 000 does to Covax.

Moeti revealed that 28 million vaccines have been administered on the continent, however, 200 million more are still needed.
