WATCH: New Durban promenade officially open
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
The newly-extended Durban Beach promenade is now open for business and leisure, just in time for the festive season.
eThekwini Mayor, Mxolisi Kaunda officially opened the 750 metre extension on Saturday.
He was joined by over 6 000 walkers on an 8km fun walk to cut the ribbon.
The mayor says there will be extra security on the promenade for the extended operating hours over the upcoming holidays.
“The festive period
is truly a time that we savour as it provides us the opportunity to showcase
our beautiful City and its endless offerings to all, local, national and
international visitors,” he said.
The extension makes the Durban Beach Promenade the longest in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Work on the extension began in January last year and the project is said to have cost around R400 million.
The City says the extended promenade is expected to unlock the R35 billion Point Waterfront Development, which will be done in three phases over the next 10 to 15 years.
