WATCH: Health workers, Ramphosa and Mkhize receive J&J vaccine
Updated | By Andrew Robertson
It’s a shot in the arm for the fight against the coronavirus pandemic as a Cape Town nurse has become the first person in the
country to get vaccinated at the Khayelitsha District Hospital in Cape Town.
It officially marks the first phase of South Africa’s vaccine rollout programme, which prioritises frontline healthcare workers.
President Cyril Ramaphosa and Health Minister Zweli Mkhike have also just received their Johnson & Johnson jabs.
Ramaphosa says it’s a milestone for the country, "This day represents a real milestone for us as South Africans. Finally, the vaccines are here. They are being administered and I was rather pleased that there were five people vaccinated before me and they are health workers."
He jokingly said it was a joy to watch them and see if anything happened to them, " gladly nothing happened and means that being vaccinated is a fairly straight forward process."
The 80 000 doses of the J&J vaccine arrived in the country last night and have been distributed to provinces.
Government says it’s procured more vaccines which are expected in the country in a few weeks.
