Warning against wrong-way driving in Umhlanga
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
Durban Metro Police have warned they will be keeping a closer eye on traffic flow on the Millenium Bridge in Umhlanga Ridge during the afternoon peak hour traffic.
This is after police were alerted to motorists driving in the oncoming traffic lane going toward the Crescent Shopping Centre and to the Gateway Theatre of Shopping on the bridge to avoid being stuck in the traffic queue towards the N2.
Newswatch was contacted by motorist Belinda Usher who drives on this bridge frequently in the afternoon and had a near brush with death as she avoided a motorist driving on the wrong lane.
''It's often taxis, but on that particular day it was just cars. They pulled out and headed straight towards me and I was headed towards Gateway.
''They headed straight towards me and basically forced me to pull over, when I was in the correct lane.
''It was either that or a head-on collision. In the congested side, people just take liberty and pull out, cross the double white line and head on straight towards the oncoming traffic. Inevitably there's going to be a dreadful accident,'' he said.
