Van Rooyen accuses ANC of colluding with private sector

Former Finance Minister, Des van Rooyen has accused the African National Congress (ANC ) of colluding with the private sector to capture the state.
"I think if the terms of reference of this commission are extended; definitely we will get to understand why some of these things are happening. Why the ruling party's elective conference - the private sector has so much in that conference.
"They pump in so much money in that conference to make sure that their preferred candidate comes out. Is this not signs of state capture?" he questioned.
In December 2015, then backbencher Van Rooyen was controversially appointed head of Treasury - after former president - Jacob Zuma fired Minister Nhlanhla Nene.
He lasted only a few days at Treasury - and was soon replaced by Pravin Gordhan after Zuma faced immense political and economic pressure to revoke his decision.
Van Rooyen has been accused of having been involved in Zuma's and the Gupta's alleged plot to take control of Treasury.
He used his opening statement at his appearance on Tuesday at the State Capture Inquiry to hit back, saying he and those associated with Zuma had been tried in the court of public opinion and branded corrupt.
Earlier in the day - former Treasury Director-General Lungisa Fuzile stuck to his 2018 testimony where he implicated Van Rooyen in state capture.
Fuzile testified that Van Rooyen was appointed - along with two Gupta linked advisors, Mohamed Bobat and Ian Whitely.
Van Rooyen's lawyer, has told the commission Fuzile has lied.
