uThukela urged to provide clarity on suspended officials

The South African Municipal Workers Union in KZN is calling on the uThukela District Municipality to clarify the suspension of 12 municipal officials.
SAMWU's Ndumiso Simelane says they are concerned that the municipal manager hastily moved to suspend workers having not followed proper steps.
"We don't have a problem with the suspension or intention to suspend workers, but our concern was the way they did it. It was new to us, so that is why we have written to the employer to say please can you stop what you are going and give us an audience so that we can seek clarity pertaining to the intention, so suspension letters that were issued to our members."
Last month, two independent forensic reports by the Department of Cooperative Governance in KZN implicated four district municipal officials in malfeasance, corruption, and maladministration.

However, Simelane says the suspension of the workers was made to divert attention away from the real corruption suspects.
"We strongly see that the accounting officer is trying, by all means, to shift the blame to the people that are innocent, and there is nothing that happened to the people that we strongly believe that they are implicated in the forensic report.
"So now the people that were supposed to be suspended are the senior managers, now there is nothing that happened to the senior managers."
