Union to continue legal battle against fracking in KZN
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union says it is up to all of us to protect the province's natural resources and communities from the risks of fracking.
This comes after the North Gauteng High Court granted an interim order interdicting the Minister of Mineral Resources from issuing mining exploration rights to Rhino Oil and Gas Exploration.
The company is eyeing the Midlands region.
KwaNalu CEO, Sandy Le Marque says although the order is not final, it's a small victory for farmers and other land owners..
"We obviously need to have good clean energy but at the end of the day - we can't provide energy at a compromise to our food security, water security and our health. If you look at the international information that has come out from countries across the world - it tells a story that there are severe risks that can come from exploration using the fracking method," she said.

Le Marque says this application is one of two major fracking applications affecting the province - covering a total area of 1.6 million hectares and more than 15 farms.
"So both of those will be going ahead in terms of the legal processes that are provided for in the legislation. We will be presenting our case when the judge gives us the date and we will hopefully be successful in the next application to stop the exploration going ahead in its current proposed form," she said.
