Umvoti municipality coughs up R18m on personal security for senior officials

The mayor of Umvoti says R18 million has been spent on security for him and seven senior officials in the past year, because of death threats.
Last month, residents of Enhlalakahle marched to the municipal offices in Greytown accusing the municipality's top officials of looting and misappropriating funds.

They called for the mayor and other senior officials to step down.
On Thursday, mayor Thamsanqa Ngubane called a press briefing in Mayville where he refuted the allegations.
He says the security around him and others is necessary following the burning down of his house, and the killing of a senior municipal official last year.
