Umgeni Water engineers have been trying since Saturday to fix the problem detected on the Aqueduct 4 pipeline in Claremont.

Water supplied to eThekwini Municipality is treated at the plant.

Umgeni Water spokesperson Shami Harichunder says the Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant supplies the resource to areas including the northern and southern suburbs.

"We quickly shut off the pipeline, transfer the water out of it into Aqueduct number 3.

"At this stage, what is happening is that we have discovered where the leak is, there is a breakage on the pipe and it requires specialist people to go into the pipe and weld it and replace the pipes.

"We have done a complete analysis, in our estimate, it is going to take at least seven days to repair the leak, so it means for seven days we are going to be supplying a reduced amount of raw water to Durban Heights Water Treatment Plant."
