Ugu District Municipality considers water desalination
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
The Ugu District Municipality on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast says it is exploring the possibility of desalination in order to ensure that there is enough drinking water for residents.
The municipality's France Zama has described the drought situation as dire.
He says a public meeting will be held next week to take residents through a draft environmental impact assessment and a proposed desalination plant in Ilovu.
Residents have 40 days to comment on the matter.
"In terms of a long-term solution to the problem because even if the water that we currently have now as there's no rain it will mean we need to explore a long-term option - that is desalination.
"We're going to explore ideas from experts in terms of how we can go about looking at sea water as a possible option to alleviate the problem that we currently have," he said.
