On Thursday, hundreds of metered taxi operators in the province marched through the Durban CBD, saying the online taxi hailing  service has been allowed to flout regulations and their anti-competitive pricing is putting them out of business. They handed over a memorandum to transport officials, giving them 14 days to respond to their demands.

But Uber's General Manager, Alon Lits, says there's a misconception that Uber has a disregard for the law, adding it's simply not true.

"We are open to engaging with metered taxi operators and pretty much any operator in the market that we have approached we have looked to partner with them," he said.

"We have continued to do that and we remain committed to partnering with existing operators. However we also need to see some form of commitment from the other side," Lits said.
