Traffic to peak in the new year as travellers return home

The N3 Toll Concession says a hive of activities has died down on the route following a busy Christmas long weekend.

"The N3 toll route over the past weekend was fairly busy but it was expected.

It is now starting to die down with traffic volumes averaging just under a thousand vehicles an hour throughout most of the day yesterday and we are expecting that to continue until new years eve and into the weekend.

Concessions spokesperson Thania Dhoogra says they saw about 1500 cars pass through the N3 on Christmas eve.

"Since then the traffic volumes have reduced. We have had quite a significant increase in traffic on Monday as a lot of people seem to be travelling northbound when we reached highs up to 1700 an hour. But it didn't last for very long."

She says they do not anticipate a lot of motorists on the road ahead of New years eve on Friday.

"Our forecast is that the traffic should remain fairly stable as they are now so we are in normal traffic patterns for the rest of this week.

"We will likely see a bit of a ramp-up for new years day but our expectation is that the real traffic will hit the n3 on the 2nd and 3rd of January as most travellers return home."
