The 14-month-old girl and her three-year-old sister were being carried by their mother across the river when the woman lost her footing in the water and slipped.

"The mother called for help and community members came to her assistance. The children and the mother were taken to the nearby clinic where they were treated," KZN EMS spokesperson, Robert Mckenzie said.

Mckenzie says the young child was then declared dead while the three-year-old was found to be in a serious condition.

"The three-year-old was treated by paramedics and sisters at the clinic before being transported to hospital before being transported to hospital by the Department of Health's air ambulance for continued medical care."
