Three killed in KZN light aircraft crash

The plane that went missing in KwaZulu-Natal has been found in the Midlands.

The provincial Department of Transport said there were no survivors.

The light aircraft left Virginia Airport in Durban North at around 3 pm on Sunday with three people on board.

The alarm was raised when it did not reach its alternate destination.

The aircraft was last tracked flying over Ladysmith heading south towards either Pietermaritzburg or Greytown.

The department has revealed that a student pilot, Nqobile Biyela, was piloting the plane.

It says it has been in contact with her mother.

The identities of the other two occupants have yet to be released, as officials are still trying to locate their families.

The matter has been handed over to the police and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for investigation.
