Emergency first responders say three other people suffered minor to moderate injuries and were transported to hospital.
A woman has lost her life in a crash on the N3 near the Mariannhill Toll Plaza on Wednesday morning.
It is understood that a truck, travelling towards Durban, ploughed into several cars before veering into oncoming lanes.
Trucker appears to have lost control
Three other people were hurt.
While the circumstances surrounding the crash are not yet known, reports from the scene suggest that the driver may have lost control of the vehicle.
The collision led to the closure of the Pietermaritzburg-bound side of the highway after a corn spill from the truck.
Medics assess the scene
Motorists heading towards Durban are experiencing slow-moving traffic.
"Paramedics assessed the scene and found unfortunately that one of the vehicle drivers, a female, believed to [have been] in her 30s had sustained fatal injuries and there was nothing paramedics could do for her," said ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson.
"She was declared deceased at the scene. Three other drivers had sustained minor to moderate injuries and once stabilised on scene by Advanced Life Support paramedics, they were transported to various Durban hospitals for the further care that they required."
