Thousands march in solidarity with ex-miners
Updated | By ECR Newswatch
Hundreds of people, many of them former mineworkers, are expected to take part in the 'Justice for Miners March' in Johannesburg today.
The ex-workers are seeking compensation in the South Gauteng High Court in a case dubbed the David versus Goliath class action lawsuit.
The former workers claim they were exposed to conditions which caused them to contract TB and silicosis, a lung disease, while working in the country's gold mines.
Their case got underway yesterday.
32 mine companies are set to present their counter-arguments later this week.
Tanya Charles is with Sonke Gender Justice, a friend of the court. She says mine bosses need to be held accountable.
''We really want to draw attention to Anglo American essentially, to the gold mining house - basically to say that these miners are not in this fight alone, their families are not alone.
''We are expecting people gathered to participate in this march from Amcu, Sonke and various other organisations,'' she said.
