Third wave: Winter could see Covid-19 cases peak again, warns Mkhize

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize's warning another major spike in Covid-19 infections could rear its head again, in the form of a third wave.

Mkhize addressed the issue during a discussion yesterday, with health experts on Covid-19 vaccines - hosted by WITS.

"Well, because of the Easters, because of winter, because of the fact that people might be feeling that things are more relaxed. We are going to run into a problem with viral infections. It's going to spread more so as we go towards winter."


Over 73 thousand healthcare workers have now been vaccinated as part of the country's first phase of inoculations.


The Minister says South Africa develop and manufacture its own Covid-19 jab.

"So in future, we run into challenges we are at least able to deal with our own supply as it were. At the moment, there is no manufacturing capacity in the continent and there is a portion of it that is done by Aspen."
