Technical glitch blamed for NPO payment failure

More than 100 KwaZulu-Natal non-profit organisations that haven't received government funding for two months will be paid by no later than Wednesday, the provincial Social Development Department has promised.

The affected organisations are among some 600 that Social Development works with.

They receive funding on a monthly basis, but some have not been for December and January.

The department's Mhlaba Memela says there was a glitch in the system operated by the provincial Treasury.

"The department quickly moved through the CFO to verify what was the problem and they found that there was a technical glitch in the payment system and that was resolved immediately.

"We gave them the indication that they will be able to get their payments by today which is Wednesday, surely some of them have received their money."

Memela has hit back at those who he says have deliberately been spreading panic and misinformation over the mishap.

"We are very much concerned that there are people who go around and spread misinformation so say that government is failing.

"NPOs are an extended arm of the department and we work with them and NPOs go to some areas where the department is unable to reach and ensure that service delivery is being done to those communities."
