Teaching of maths and science must change: MUT Dean
Updated | By Khatija Nxedlana
The Dean of Engineering at the Mangosuthu University of Technology in Durban says more needs to be done to bridge the Maths and Science gap at high school and tertiary levels.
The university is currently hosting Africa Engineering Week.
Professor Senzo Malinga says they often find that students come in with good maths and science marks but fail to translate those into good a performance in their engineering studies.
Malinga says the university eases entry into the field of engineering through a bridging course.
''We've found that students cope better if they do the bridging course which we call the Pre-Technicians Programme. They then find it easier to cope in the first year.
''We find that the drop-out rate of our first years is higher with those who don't go through such a bridging course, than those who have gone through the programme,'' he said.
Malinga says the way maths and science are currently being taught at a school level needs to be reviewed.
