Syndicate suspected in Mona illegal power connections
Updated | By Anelisa Kubheka
The eThekwini Municipality believes a syndicate, with knowledge and skills of electricity, is behind the illegal connections of Mona residents, an informal settlement in Tongaat on the KZN north coast.
Yesterday, a joint operation between the city, Telkom and Eskom saw the illegal connections in the area disconnected.
This was done under heavy police and security escort. Residents however say they have no choice but to connect illegally. They say they paid to be illegally connected but refused to say how much and who was connecting them.
The city says a large number of deaths due to these connections is what prompted the large scale operation, which it says is the third of its kind in recent years.
